CHILI
Capsicum annuum
Some like it hot! And if you do, then why not add a kick to your taste buds? A great garden all-rounder, chillis are perfect for growing in pots. But take note, they are very sensitive and do not take well to transplanting so ensure you have the right sized pot before sowing and use a high-quality premium potting mix and add compost. These plants love the heat and will thrive in a sunny position, just take care on extra hot days they don't dry out. Loaded with vitamins, chillis are a hot boost to the immune system – you can add them fresh to your dishes or dry them out to make home-made chilli powder.
PLANT
In hotter climates sow seeds between August and December, while in colder climates sow between September and mid-November. Chillies need to be at a consistent 20 °C to germinate so keep this in mind when deciding when to sow.
HARVEST
Most chillies can be harvested from December through to April. Fruits can be picked at any stage from early green to fully ripe. Size of the plant depends on the variety, but most grow quite tall and bushy.
Eat
Chili is a great addition to savoury meals, especially asian style cooking. Use it throughout or as a garnish to elevate a meal.
PRESERVE
Chili oil is a well known way to preserve chilis and add a kick to any meal.
