PIGFACE
Carpobrotus
The old adage ‘never judge a book by its cover’ rings true for the humble Pigface. Often overlooked due to their unfortunate common name, these hero plants of the Australian garden not only provide an abundance of bright and cheerful flowers in Spring (that bees just love!), it also plays an important role in the ecosystem by stabilising soil.
PLANT
Spring to Summer.
HARVEST
The succulent leaves and flowers can be harvested all year-round, yet the best time is spring and summer. The pigface fruit ripen after flower is pollinated – the flower body plumps up and changes its colour to deep red and can be easily spotted on green foliage. Be gentle while picking fruit, try not to squish or squash our humble pigface. Grows approx. 20cm high and stretches about 2m wide.
EAT
The leaves and fruit are edible, adding a delicious salty taste to your garden salads.
PRESERVE
Ideal for jams, chutneys and pickles.
